The Catch Spring 2021

Hello! Welcome to the latest issue of "The Catch", published for Nassau's best rowing club.

First Annual Exuma Beach Sprints A Success!

The first-ever coastal rowing regatta held in The Bahamas and in The Caribbean took place on 27th - 28th March 2021 in Exuma. The Exuma Beach Sprints Invitational Regatta, hosted by Skullers Rowing Club, saw 27 rowers contesting 3 events across both youth male, youth female, and open categories. Skullers Rowing Club showed their skill handling the choppy conditions, and we were thrilled to participate in the first of many inter-island regattas!

The Beach Sprints format followed guidelines set by FISA, the international governing body for rowing, with a running start down the beach 10 metres into a coastal rowing boat held by two teammates. The rowers then proceeded 250 meters out into the bay, navigating a slalom course then rounding the far buoy before sprinting back toward the beach. Each head-to-head race took approximately four minutes, for an exciting weekend of Time trials, heats and finals.

Congratulations to Henryk Kania for committing to Hamilton College!

"My name is Henryk and I’m 18 years old. I was born and raised in Poland, but currently I’m living my Bahamian dream. I’m passionate about sports in general and I love to cook (doesn’t mean I’m a good cook). During normal times, I spend most of my year in the United States, where I attend Kent School in Connecticut. I touched a sweeping oar for the first time in March 2019, when I joined Kent School Boat Club. At the end of the 2019 racing season, I was 7 seven seat in the 3rd varsity eight, which placed 3rd at the New England Championship.

Another milestone in my rowing journey happened in July 2020, when I started sculling. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to race in 2020, but I still think it was a productive year for me. Rowing has also helped me find a place for the next 4 years of my life, as I’ll be attending Hamilton College starting this fall. Certainly, I’ll be joining the rowing team and competing at the Division III level. I’m looking forward to representing Nassau Rowing Club all over the world!"
